Setting up second ISP

+5 votes

Hi there, (forgive my ignorance)

I currently have a line and connection through Telkom, is it possible to have a second ISP (ie Afrihost) and switch between the two?

If so, how would i set that up?

Thanks

Hi,

You can setup a 'second ISP' by changing the username & password details on your ADSL modem to the second ISP if the modem from Telkom allows for this (which most do allow).

Login to your ADSL router and change the username & password details under PPoE to your Afrihost details and connect. When you need to change back to Telkom, login to your ADSL router and change the username & password details under PPoE to your Telkom details.

If you have two ADSL routers, you can have one setup with Telkom details & the other with Afrihost details and interchange them when you want.

Another easier (advanced know how) way of doing it with the same router would be to setup the router with the Telkom details and create a backup of your router via the maintainance tab. Then setup the router with the Afrihost details and create a backup of your router. When you want to swap the services, you restore your router with the backup of the service you want to use (that is Afrihost or Telkom router backup). This is so that you won't have to keep typing in the username and password for the different accounts. The Afrihost details are easier to change to something you know/remember but the Telkom details always come with random/different access details which are hard to remember.
