When do SIM cards expire?

+2 votes
I am currently using MTN prepaid voice and Afrihost monthly APN mobile data. I frequently leave the country for more than 90 days, at which point I cancel my Afrihost mobile APN, as I believe Afrihost mobile data does not roam, I just sign up again on my return.

As it is right now, if I do not make a chargable call while roaming within 90 days, MTN will deactivate my sim. This is not really a problem as prepaid voice does roam, but it is not particularly cheap and I might forget. I normally use local sims when abroad. MTN Access for life extender charges R20 per 3 months, but that is R20 I would rather spend on something useful, like actual airtime.

If I purchase a 12 month prepaid Afrihost voice bundle and don't use my SIM for more than 90 days, do the same expiry rules apply?

Hello Sean

Thank you for the question. A very good one.

If the sim card is purchased through Afrihost and this is on a prepaid package it will not expire after 3 months or more of no usage. We have specifically made the plans with MTN to keep the selected sims on the network active and running for you to use within the 12 month period.

MTN Prepaid SIMS bought elsewhere.
Thats good to know. However, in my case, I have 3 MTN sim cards bought at Checkers and have since switched all 3 to Afrihost prepaid . Will these cards still remain active if not used within 12 months?

On the other hand, when I have left SA for more than 3 months, I have made a point of making a chargeable call once every 90 days. And as MTN/Afrihost voice does roam pretty much everywhere, this works for me even in Canada, Europe and elsewhere. The cost of doing this is less than the hassle of changing my number as it is used for mobile banking etc.
Hello Sean

Thank you for the feedback, Unfortunately if they are not delivered from Afrihost then the sim cards will deactivate.
